Northeastern folk custom is to bake noodles on the 28th day of the twelfth lunar month and to steam steamed buns on the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month. Every household will steam several pots of big steamed buns, which means that the days in the coming year will be prosperous. I remember when I was a child, because my father passed away early, my mother took us three brothers and sisters to live with us. Our family was very poor and we could rarely eat fish during the Chinese New Year. My mother would definitely steam a pot of fish noodles for us and fry a pot of fish noodles, which we could only eat during the Chinese New Year. There was little white flour at that time, so my mother would mix some cornmeal and wrap it with bean filling. The steamed fish would be golden and auspicious, and the family would be reunited, happily looking forward to a better future in the coming year! The golden rooster brings good fortune, with more than one year after year. Taking advantage of this metaphor, I also steamed a dish full of New Year's flavor. The noodles are completely made of pumpkin puree. The golden color symbolizes grace and splendor, as well as wealth and good luck. When the dough is put into the pot, what comes out after steaming is always very different from what I imagined. It's either fat, blooming, or too hot. So I made a lot of fish.
