Braised pork trotters

Braised pork trotters

Overview

Braised pig's trotters are also called Wanshan pig's trotters. There is a legend about the origin of Wanshan pig's trotters. It is said that Zhu Yuanzhang proposed to eat these pig's trotters in order to make things difficult for Shen Wanshan, the richest businessman in Jiangnan. However, the locally processed pig's trotters are very hard and can only be eaten if cut with a knife, and knives and sharp objects are not allowed in front of the emperor. Shen Wanshan came up with a way to take the prepared pig's trotters home and simmer them over low heat until the meat was very soft and could be separated with just a light touch. Because Shen Wanshan's money was much more than that of Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang, Zhu Yuanzhang deliberately wanted to harm Shen Wanshan. Zhu Yuanzhang asked Shen Wanshan to treat the emperor and queen to dinner. Zhu Yuanzhang suddenly pointed at the pig's trotters and said to him: What kind of dish is this? If Shen Wanshan answered pig's trotters, pig and Zhu have the same name, wouldn't that mean eating the emperor's feet? It must have offended the emperor, and it is not impossible for the emperor to sentence him to death! At this time, Shen Wanshan quickly changed his mind and said: This is 'Wanshan Hoof', please taste it to the emperor. In this way, Shen Wanshan solved this life-and-death test question and prevented Zhu Yuanzhang from harming him. And that dish: Braised Pork Trotters was therefore renamed Wanshan Pork Trotters.
