The first meal of the Laba Festival in Shanxi - red silk rice
Overview
It's Laba Festival again. As the saying goes, after Laba Festival, it's the New Year. Accordingly, I also have the expectation to go home. Because the distance between my mother's family and my husband's family is too far, I made a rule with my husband before marriage that the Chinese New Year will take turns, one year to my mother's family, one year to my mother-in-law's family, and this year I will go back to my mother's home, Shanxi. Although there are still more than twenty days until the New Year, I can’t wait for it. I was so homesick that I even made Laba porridge according to the customs of my hometown. The Laba porridge of Shanxi people is mainly made of millet, with red dates and red beans as ingredients. It is sweet and glutinous in the mouth, also known as red thick rice. The first meal of the Little Laba Festival is red thick rice. There is a saying in my hometown that if you don't eat red thick rice in the morning, you will get 'pink eye'. I still don’t know what pinkeye is, but I’ve never been without red rice. It’s soft, glutinous, and sweet. How can I not love it?
